Function:
Riboflavin (vitamin B2) is a coenzyme in numerous reactions
involved with amino acid metabolism, as well as the breakdown
of sugars and fatty acids.
Recommended
Dietary Allowance:
For
men 1.3 mg per day and for women 1.1 mg per day.
Deficiency:
Deficiency results in a sore throat, redness and swelling
in the mouth and tongue, anemia, and a dry scaling rash.
It is usually associated with other nutritional deficiencies.
Sources:
Milk,
yogurt, cheese, meat, eggs, broccoli, asparagus, oranges,
and whole grain foods are good sources of riboflavin.
Toxicity
and UL:
There are no reports of human toxicity and no UL has been
set.
Recommendation:
Supplementing
with riboflavin is not necessary. A clinical trial using
riboflavin 400 mg daily in 54 people with migraine headache
showed improvement over a three-month trial period. This
study needs to be repeated.
